MONDAY Refuse Collection
Many of you will have picked up from the South Cambs Magazine that our
collection day is to change to Mondays at the beginning of August. The new wheelie bin service will be starting
in September. Details of what is
involved are all in the middle pages of the magazine. The new wheelie bins will be delivered to each household towards
the end of August. If you have any
problems, call the Hotline 0845 650 0280.
To help you, I have set out below the new dates and
collection service:
Monday 4th – refuse sack collection
Monday 11th – refuse sack collection and green recycling
boxes
Monday 18th – refuse sack collection
Tuesday 26th – refuse sack collection and green recycling boxes (day late
after bank holiday)
Monday 1st September – refuse sack collection
Monday 8th September – new green wheelie bin and green
box collection.
Monday 15th September – new black wheelie bin
collection.
Bus Service Stagecoach has pulled out of their contract to run the
service from Cambridge to Saffron Walden via Ickleton. A new contract will have started by the time
you read this and the hourly service will continue as before. There are some minor changes to the
timetable, a copy of which is on the notice board and inside this issue on page
3.
Wellcome Trust, Southfield Project Work is continuing on the new campus main
entrance. The wetlands re-modelling is
under way with bulk earth moving to create the new landscape. No construction other than the repositioning
of earth will be undertaken in this area. Completion of the new landscape is
planned for late September to allow seeding and planting to be achieved prior
to the spring of 2004.
Telephone Kiosk in Coploe Road BT
has applied to the District Council to replace the old red box with a modern
kiosk. The Parish Council feels that a
modern kiosk would be inappropriate in a rural setting and have made
representations to have the old one repaired.
We will have to wait and see what is decided.
Church Street to Butcher’s Hill Footpath Repairs to the adjoining wall are in hand
and the footpath will be reopened as soon as they are completed.
Car Parking May we
encourage you to be responsible residents when parking. Please use your off-street parking and
garages whenever possible, to relieve congestion in the village. It is thoughtless to park opposite a dropped
curb, (ie where there are no kerbstones), as it will make vehicular access to a
driveway or garage difficult.
Clerk’s Hours I would appreciate being called only during office
hours – not at 10.00 p.m. or during Sunday lunch! Jackie Casement - Parish Clerk

From the Vicar
So many good things have
happened in the last few weeks that I’d like to share a few of them with you.
Our Church Day at Duxford School was a big hit with the children. The theme ‘All
God’s Creatures’ gave us a splendid opportunity to bring all sorts of creatures
into school, including owls, a pony, some sheep, a parrot, an assortment of
bugs and a delightful guidedog with his owner. Year 6 very much enjoyed their
trip to Waitrose to track down Organic and Fair
Trade Products and the
whole school was delighted to welcome back music maestro Steve Whyatt from
Scripture Union who came to lead us in our closing worship. If you’re in school
in the next week or so there is a very good display in the entrance hall of
photographs taken during the day.
SpiritLevel’s outing to
‘Rave in the Nave’ at Ely Cathedral was another great experience. Top Christian
bands, sumo wrestling and Scalectrix were among the attractions plus a
chill-out café, meditation zone, hotdogs and barbeque. For those who don’t
know, SpiritLevel is our new youth group; we are currently planning our Autumn
programme and there will be some exciting trips and events for young teens and
their friends so if you would like to receive information then drop me an
email.
Last but not least those
who went on the Summer Pilgrimage ‘In the Steps of John Bunyan’ also had a
terrific time. The beautiful weather was a ‘plus’ and made our journey very
pleasurable. Houghton House (the original ‘House Beautiful’), Elstow Village
Green (where we picnicked) and the Bunyan Meeting Free Church in Bedford (where
we were received with kind hospitality and ended our day by singing John
Bunyan’s famous hymn ‘Who would true valour see’) were among the highlights.
Canterbury next year, anyone?
Since August is the holiday
month for so many of us, we will be moving to a simplified calendar for the
next five weeks. There will be just one morning and one evening service each
Sunday and no Thursday lunchtime Eucharist. May I wish you a happy time,
whether at home or away, and may you find relaxation and refreshment in
whatever you do.
With God’s blessing. Jane Charman

We were all saddened by the death of Dick Hennessey.
He was once a regular member of our club and used to
enjoy his game of cards, which he was
good at. Unfortunately he had to go into a care home so we missed seeing him.
I could tell the time by when he passed my house on
his way to Hinxton and back.
Our condolences to his sister and family. Mrs.
R. Lilley
We are pleased to announce a new hiring charge of £25
for afternoon children’s parties for families resident in the parish.
The Village Hall Committee
The Autumn 2003 Coach Holiday will be to Weymouth,
Dorset.
Regrettably this is to be the last holiday I shall be
arranging.
I would like to thank everyone who has been with us
for the past eighteen years, for their support and loyalty.
I send my love and good wishes to you all. Betty
Willmott
Would you like to have a chat over coffee with
friends and neighbours while making patchwork quilts for the disabled?
Please phone Joan Roberts for more information.
At some point early in July someone left two blue
trunks, one large and one small, outside Duxford Church. They may be school trunks and are empty
apart from some passport type photos of a teenage boy. The trunks are labelled ‘Church’ which no
doubt explains why they were delivered to us in error. If anyone knows anything about these trunks
please contact me.

This month’s quiz night held on Saturday 19th
July was another great success.
The committee would like to thank all those who took
part, made raffle prize contributions and helped to organise and run the
evening, making it one of the best, most well supported quiz evenings so far.
The next quiz will be held at 9.00 p.m. on 30th
August. We look forward to seeing you!.

Despite a tremendous thunderstorm at 6.00 p.m. the summer outing to Rectory Farm was a great success. In particular Mary’s Mediterranean garden created a lot of interest.
A glass or two of Pimm’s and light refreshments
helped to get everyone in party mood.
Our grateful thanks to Mary and W.I. husband Dick for
the lovely evening we spent with them.
The next regular meeting will be on August 20th in Great Chesterford Community Hall, when
the guest speaker will be Mr. Ken Hitch – subject ‘Ely Cathedral unseen.’

Just a note to say thank you so much to everyone who
sponsored me recently in the Cambridge Race for Life event. I managed to run all of the 5 km course in
just under 32 minutes and with your help I have raised the fantastic sum of
£180 for Cancer Research UK. Thank you.

Prizes Galore at the Duxford show!
Fancy a meal at the Jade Fountain, a night out
bowling at Strikes, a trip to the Panto at the Cambridge Arts Theatre, wine
tasting at Chilford Hall, a treatment at Tranquillity beauty salon, a visit to
Shepreth Wildlife Park, tickets to an airshow, or hiring a VW Touran for a
weekend?
If you do, come along to the Duxford Show on Sunday
24th August, on the Huntsman Playing Fields, Hinxton Road, and you
might win one of these, or many other fantastic prizes, by entering the many
quizzes and competitions that will be running on the day.
There will be a treasure map, a balloon race, a
village picture quiz and a golf game – and many old favourites like splat the
rat, hook a duck and beat the goalie.
New for this year will be catch the egg, nails in the bale, jam jar
jamboree, lucky 50-50 square, and double your money.
“We have had fantastic support from local businesses
this year,” says Duxford Show Society Chairman Jenny Parker. “We depend heavily
on our sponsors – without them there would be no show. Their contribution of venue, facilities,
printing, trophies, refreshments, prizes and cash donations, allows us to put
on an afternoon’s entertainment with minimum financial outlay. This means that most of the money people
spend will go straight into the Duxford Village Hall Fund.
We would particularly like to thank our major
sponsors, Huntsman, Hexcel Composites Ltd., Volvo Construction Equipment GB
Ltd., and Syngenta Crop Protection UK Ltd. - and all the other 40 or so local
businesses, that have contributed in some way.”
It’s not too late to enter:
Entries into the horticulture, flower arranging, cookery and homecrafts competitions are coming in steadily now, but it’s not too late to enter. Pick up a schedule at Duxford Post Office, if you didn’t get one through your door, and see what you could have a go at. There are prize cards and vouchers for the winners of each section, and the overall ‘Best in Show’ entry.
If you want to enter your treasured car or bike into the Classic vehicle display – call Brian Woodhams ' 01223 837418. Visitors will vote on the one they would most like to take home, and the owner of the winning vehicle gets a prize.
Tickets for the evening hog roast and barn dance will sell like hot cakes (they did last year!). So pick yours up from Duxford Post Office before they all go!

Ticket sales for the Imperial War Museum’s first ever
Flying Proms on Saturday 26th July exceeded all expectations.
Marketing and Public Relations Manager at Duxford,
Tracey Woods said “This event seems to have really captured the public’s
imagination with its wonderful mix of stirring music, historic aircraft and
evocative setting.”
The Flying Proms concert, performed by the English
National Orchestra, had something for everyone. Highlights included firm favourites such as Tchaikovsky’s 1812
Overture, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia
and Jerusalem. Before dusk, some of the
world’s most historic aircraft gave breath-taking displays to appropriate and
moving music, including the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster
displaying to Coates’ Dambusters’ Theme, the legendary Spitfire and Hurricane
to Ron Goodwin’s Battle of Britain March and the elegant 1930s Hawker Nimrod
performing to Elgar’s Nimrod from his Enigma Variations. Concert goers were also encouraged to ‘get
in the mood’ with a P-51 Mustang displaying to Glenn Miller’s Pennsylvania
65000.
As darkness fell at Duxford, the former Battle of
Britain fighter station during the Second World War, was lit by thousands of
lanterns and tea-lights with the American Air Museum adjacent to the concert
arena spectacularly lit with soft up-lighters.
The orchestra, conducted by the flamboyant Jae Alexander and accompanied
by Wynne Evans, principal tenor with the Welsh National Opera, and the highly
acclaimed star soprano Janet Mooney, reflected the mood, entertaining the
audience with some of the best loved arias in the world, including the
unforgettable Nessun Dorma from Turandot and Habanera and Chanson Bohem from
Carmen.
Finally, in a dazzling finale, the sky lit up with a
spectacular firework display to end a truly memorable evening on a high.

Who Played….?
You seem to have
found the quiz at this year’s fete tougher than last year’s – somewhat
to our surprise, we thought it would be easier. But there were some notable entries. First prize goes to Lawrence Wragg with 49 out of a possible 54
points. Runners up were the Walker
family with 43 points. The quiz raised
£90, thank you one and all.

The Church Fete on Saturday 19th July was
a happy village occasion aided by it being a glorious summer’s day.
Fundraising events such as this are vital to providing
the funds to maintain our wonderful village church. People were very generous in spending money on the various stalls
and activities and the result was an estimated profit of £1,700 - a very
satisfactory total !
The success of the Fete was due to the superb
organisation by Monica Lilley and we congratulate her on her efforts.
We thank the many stall holders and their helpers and
those organising other activites. The
quiz arranged by our Vicar tested our knowledge of ‘who played what’ to the
full, and Hilary Rule organised a pet show which caused amusement both to the
dogs and their owners. Dick Wombwell and friends with their vintage vehicles
and Sawston fire engine turned up! The
Fancy Dress Parade,, organised by Sarah Mila, and the Face Painting by Anne
Maire Hoare, contributed to keeping the children amused. Thanks to those who
gave prizes for the raffle and to Sarah Mila on her expertise with newspaper
advertising.

Thirteen dogs and one tortoise were entered for our
Pet Show this year.
There were three classes for dogs, based on age.
The under-two’s was won by Polly (Holland) a 4 month
old Irish Retriever, Flora (Isaac) a 5 year old Pointer was first in the middle
range age group (2+ to 5 years) while Gina (Marshall) was awarded the first
prize for the seniors (6-11 years).
Gina then went on to win the coveted Best-in-Show, despite a minor doggy
dispute on stage!
Myrtle (Turton) arrived in her own carriage and
looked beautiful with her newly oiled shell gleaming. She was given a Special Award.

Firefly Accident 12th July 2003
The tragic crash of the Royal Navy’s Firefly on
Saturday 12th July will understandably have caused great concern among
our neighbours. I hope this report will
go some way to address these concerns.
Following the accident, the Royal Navy’s official
investigation is under way. At the same
time the Imperial War Museum and Cambridgeshire County Council have immediately
instigated a full review of the arrangements at the airfield in order to ensure
that any lessons from the tragedy are acted upon. Such a review follows every incident at Duxford, and for a
serious accident affecting the locality like this one, the review will be
comprehensive and will include not only the Museum and the County but also the
operators at Duxford and the Civil Aviation Authority. It will be led by Air Commodore Peter Naz,
Chairman of the Duxford Flight Safety Committee, under procedures recently
reviewed by the Museum and the County.
I believe our mechanisms for consultation and
feedback from those who live around the airfield are generally good and we will
use them to the full in the aftermath of this accident.
At a meeting on 15th July with County
Councillor Robin Driver, and Duxford Parish Councillors Tim Vitali (Chairman)
and Mick Martin, I gave the assurance, on behalf of the Museum, that we would
communicate with local representatives in the review and publish its findings.
In the aftermath of accidents the media always refer
to all previous serious incidents at the airfield, and even report the
precautionary standbys of emergency crews for minor problems which happen quite
regularly at all airports. This may
well lead our neighbours to think that our safety record is less good than it
really is. However, we are not
complacent and we will look again at all aspects of what we do, with special
attention to the effect of our operations on those who live nearby.
I also intend to tighten up our flying complaints
procedure, ensuring that everyone who wishes to complain gets a full and prompt
reply, and I will reinforce to all concerned with our day-to-day operations the
need for maximum consideration towards our neighbours.
To complain about or comment on noise or other flying
issues you may:
Email einman@iwm.org.uk
or write to Ted Inman, Director, Imperial War Museum,
Duxford, Cambridge CB2 4QR
or call 01223 835155 – then dial 378 to leave recorded
details of your complaint or dial 0 to speak to an operator.
In all cases please give your name, address, phone number and if possible
email address, and maximum details of
the complaint, especially the exact time of the incident. We will follow up all
reports promptly and systematically.
I will ensure that the DAMLC is kept informed on the
progress of these initiatives.
Ted Inman,
Director, IWM Duxford
The August issue of
the magazine ‘Cambridgeshire Life’ contains an article entitled ‘Picture Book
Ickleton’.
There are some
nice colour photographs (with some caption errors!) and most of the text is
taken from the Ickleton booklet available in Church.

Many thanks to all the people who allowed around twenty-five of us to enjoy their gardens on Wednesday 16th July:- Mrs. Peggy Richardson, The Glebe, Mrs. Jenny Lawson, Norman Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Bevan, The Mill House, and Mr. and Mrs. James Macdonald, Harlequin House.
All gave us hospitality and drinks and made us very
welcome on a very hot afternoon.
Thanks must also go to Mrs. Lena Frost who gave us
tea.
The charity decided on for this event was ‘Homestart’ and £63 was raised.
Again many thanks to all for a lovely afternoon and
we managed to escape the thunderstorms!
The U3A is a
retired group of people for the over 50s from the Sawston area and one
of the summer activities is looking around people’s gardens.
If there is
anyone who would allow us to look around their garden (big or small) in
Ickleton, perhaps they could contact me Monica Lilley.
A
WONDERFUL VILLAGE GET-TOGETHER!
It’s a long time ahead, but please put this date in
your diaries now! Saturday November 8th, 8.00 p.m. at Abbey Farm,
Ickleton, when we shall be holding a massive AUCTION OF PROMISES to which
everyone in the village, of any age is warmly invited.
There will be FREE food and wine and some amazing
promises to bid for, from pots of jam to sailing lessons, from fresh veg to
vintage car rides, from housework to help with homework. The promises are already starting to come in
and you’ll be hearing much more about the event in due course, including a list
of all the items promised.
So, do please put your thinking caps on. If you can offer anything – a skill, a
service, home produce, other goods - or would particularly like anything, let
us know as soon as possible.
It should be a really good evening – and a chance to
get to know your neighbours, too.
And every penny raised from the event will go towards the upkeep of our beautiful Parish Church. Rosemary Hayes

We would like
to thank all those children who took the time to dress up as their favourite
film or television character at the fete.
We would also like to thank Robin and Juff Driver for judging the
competition. The winners were Albert
